An old but active Netgear router we’ve encountered has been found to have multiple security vulnerabilities, making it a prime target to be attacked.
From having gaps in authentication to WPS PIN exposure, this router was surprisingly rife with vulnerabilities. Given that a router is similar to the front door of an internet connected home, our immediate recommendation was to replace the router with a newer model with better protection and ongoing support.
This device was a stark reminder of the importance of keeping network-facing devices up to date with firmware, addressing vulnerabilities once they’ve been discovered. The recent news of vendors and state bodies not keeping up with the administration of processing new found issues, only puts threat actors ahead and the rest of us playing catch up.
