Globe Life Insurance has recently disclosed that it is facing an extortion attempt by cybercriminals. The company reported being contacted by hackers demanding a ransom in exchange for not releasing sensitive customer information allegedly stolen during the breach.
The compromised data potentially includes customers’ full names, phone numbers, email addresses, policy details, postal addresses, health-related information, and Social Security numbers. In the meantime, Globe Life has received data samples from the cybercriminals, which appear to be connected to its subsidiary, American Income Life Insurance. Globe Life has confirmed that at least 5,000 customers have been affected by the breach.
The specific demands of the hackers were not yet declared at the time of writing. In recent cases, threat actors have seemingly been seeking credibility amongst the hacking community.
Meanwhile, Globe Life has clarified that no ransomware was involved in the attack, and no files have been encrypted. The incident appears to be an extortion-only attack. The company has also confirmed that its systems, services, and operations remain unaffected.
