An insurance administrative company, Landmark, has reported a significant data breach impacting more than 800,000 beneficiaries. The breach was detected on May 13th, leading the company to shut down its IT services and remote access entirely.
As of now, the source of the attack remains unknown, and no threat actors have come forward to claim responsibility.
In response to the breach, Landmark has engaged a third-party cybersecurity firm to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
According to Landmark’s data breach notification, the attackers accessed sensitive personally identifiable information (PII), including Social Security numbers, tax identification numbers, and medical and insurance information of 806,519 individuals.
Landmark has stated that they will notify all affected individuals about the breach. In the meantime, they advise that those impacted monitor their credit reports and bank accounts for any suspicious activity.
Otonata recommends that finance professionals maintain vigilance against threat actors targeting industries managing sensitive PII.
