Our ORIGIN
Why this, why now, why us?
As a home automation enthusiast, founder Joseph Yap has been tinkering with Smart Home technology for over a decade. Starting with garage door servers built from scratch to automated outdoor security lights and fully self-hosted home media servers, Joseph has been actively seeking convenience as technology matured. Similarly, the average Australian household had ~24 connected devices in 2023 and is expected to grow past 30 in the next four years.
Seeing this trend, threat actors are taking advantage, using multi-pronged attacks to compromise network security. In recently revealed findings from the Australian Government, these malicious hackers have “embraced the global trend of using compromised devices, including small-office/home-office (SOHO) devices, as operational infrastructure and last-hop redirectors for its operations in Australia.”
“Many of these SOHO devices are end-of-life or unpatched and offer a soft target for N-day exploitation. Once compromised, SOHO devices offer a launching point for attacks to blend in with legitimate traffic and challenge network defenders”
Being a prime target for attack, Joseph developed a cybersecurity response to protect himself and other like-minded professionals seeking convenience but also balanced with security.
Borrowing from corporate methodologies and researching known tactics of threat actors, Otonata assesses your home network from a cybersecurity perspective by evaluating the entry points and devices most at risk from a remote or nearby attacker. Home AV devices, particularly Smart TVs, DVRs, and Media Players are most vulnerable to attack, followed by networking appliances such as Routers and NAS units.
Post-assessment we will make recommendations for improving your defences and help you implement them if need be. As each home network is varied, the cybersecurity posture should be a tailored, balanced reflection of the risks and impact.
In the coming years, we expect that AI will further challenge home network security, with more sophisticated tools at cybercriminals’ disposal, with seemingly limitless resources. In this threat landscape, Otonata aims to be the cybersecurity partner of choice for professionals at home.
